Updated September 2026

The baseline every teacher and editor works from: 500 words per single-spaced page and 250 per double-spaced page, in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.

So 1,000 words is 2 pages single-spaced or 4 double-spaced, and a 5-page double-spaced paper needs about 1,250 words. The converter above works in both directions and adjusts for other fonts, sizes and spacing.

Where the 250-word page comes from

It is not arbitrary. A standard U.S. Letter page with 1-inch margins gives a text block about 6.5 inches wide and 9 inches tall. In 12pt Times New Roman that holds roughly 25 lines double-spaced, and an average English line at that width runs about 10 words. Twenty-five times ten is 250.

The same figure survived into publishing for a different reason. Before word processors, manuscripts were typed on typewriters that produced almost exactly 250 words per double-spaced page, so publishers began estimating book length by counting pages. Editors still quote manuscript length in 250-word pages today, which is why a "300-page novel" is shorthand for about 75,000 words.

The font matters more than people expect

Two documents with identical word counts can differ by more than a page over ten, purely because of the typeface. Fonts differ in how wide their letters are at the same nominal point size, and that width is what decides how many words fit on a line.

Approximate words per double-spaced page at 12pt, relative to Times New Roman.
FontWords per pageA 2,500-word essay becomes
Times New Roman~25010 pages
Calibri~24510.2 pages
Arial~23510.6 pages
Verdana~21511.6 pages

This is the mechanism behind the oldest trick in student writing — switching to a wider font or nudging the size from 12 to 12.5 to reach a page minimum. It works arithmetically and it is obvious to anyone who marks papers for a living. If an assignment specifies a font, it specifies it precisely because the page count means nothing otherwise.

The deeper point is that page counts are a poor way to specify length, and most institutions know it. Where a word count is offered, it is the real requirement; the page figure is a convenience.

What the converter does not count

The estimate assumes continuous body text. Real documents contain things that consume vertical space without contributing many words, so a real page count usually runs higher than the calculation:

  • Headings and subheadings, each with space above and below
  • Paragraph breaks — a document of many short paragraphs runs longer than one of few long ones with the same word count
  • Block quotes, which are indented and often single-spaced
  • Tables, figures and images, which can take half a page for a caption's worth of words
  • The title block, and in MLA and APA the header on every page
  • References or bibliography, usually excluded from the word count but very much present in the page count

As a working adjustment, add roughly 5–10% to the estimate for a typical academic paper with headings and citations. For something heavy in tables or figures, the calculation stops being useful and you should lay the document out.

Writing to a page minimum without padding

If you are short of a page requirement, there are two ways to close the gap and only one of them survives contact with a reader.

The formatting route — wider font, bigger size, fatter margins, extra line spacing — is transparent to anyone who reads student work for a living. Markers see the same assignment forty times; a paper set in Verdana 12.5 with 1.1-inch margins stands out immediately. It also does nothing for the grade, since the grade is for the argument.

The substance route is the one that actually works, and it is usually faster than people expect. A paper that is short is almost always short for one of three reasons, and each has a specific fix:

  • Claims without evidence. Every assertion that stands alone can take a source, a statistic or an example. This is the single largest source of legitimate length, and it is also what raises the grade.
  • No counterargument. Most short papers argue one side. Naming the strongest objection and answering it adds several hundred words and is frequently an explicit marking criterion.
  • Compressed analysis. Writers quote a source and move on. The sentence explaining why the quote supports the argument is usually missing, and it is the sentence the marker is looking for.

Work through those three and a 1,200-word draft commonly reaches 1,800 without a word of padding. Then set the font the assignment asked for and let the page count land where it lands.

Note that a novel manuscript at 400 double-spaced pages becomes a printed book of perhaps 300 pages, because typesetting is far denser than a manuscript. The two page counts measure different things and are not interchangeable.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. In Verdana it is closer to 4.6 double-spaced.

How many words is a 5-page paper?

Roughly 1,250 words double-spaced, or 2,500 single-spaced. Switch the converter above to "I need a page count" to work it out for your own font and spacing.

How many pages is 500 words?

One page single-spaced, two pages double-spaced. This is why 500 words is the most common short-essay length — it fills exactly one printed page.

Does the font really change the page count?

Yes, by 5 to 15 percent. Verdana fits about 215 words on a double-spaced page against Times New Roman's 250, so the same 2,500-word essay runs 10 pages in one and 11.6 in the other.

Why is my document longer than the estimate?

The estimate assumes continuous body text. Headings, paragraph breaks, block quotes, tables, the title block and the bibliography all take vertical space. Add 5 to 10 percent for a typical academic paper.

How many pages is a 70,000-word novel?

About 280 pages as a double-spaced manuscript, but roughly 300 pages as a printed book — typesetting is much denser than manuscript format, so the two counts are not interchangeable.

Is my word count stored anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded or saved.
